Death penalty returns in Taiwan, Four executed

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan executed 4 people on Friday, the justice ministry said, in the island's first cases of capital punishment since 2005 when the sentence became a sensitive political issue.

4 inmates convicted of crimes connected to a murder case were executed late on Friday, the ministry said in a statement, following years of fractious debate that saw the ministry's chief quit last month in protest.

"The justice ministry gave death penalty orders to the 4 people on April 28 and the order was carried out on April 30," the one-line statement said.

Ex- Justice Minister Wang Ching-feng and Amnesty International have urged Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou to scrap the death penalty.

Abolition of the law, which is widely supported, might hurt the government ahead of November local polls. A further 40 inmates remain on death row, the ministry said on Friday. Around 500 inmates were executed between 1987 and 2005.

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
Prosecutors say 2 young boys from northern Indiana wanted to run away to Arizona so badly that they gunned down a stepfather who stood in the way of their plans.

A judge ruled Thursday that the boys — ages 12 and 15 — would be tried for murder as adults for allegedly shooting the older boy's stepfather, 49-year-old Phillip Danner. The AP (Associated Press) generally does not identify juveniles charged with crimes.

Family members and Neighbors who testified at Thursday's hearing said the boys hadn't shown any signs of violent behavior before Danner's slaying last week.

But Sheriff's Detective Jonathan Tyler said the boys had plotted for at least a month to kill Phillip Danner.

Both boys are being detained in the Kosciusko County Jail.

Jobless Man Stabs 28 children at Kindergarten in China

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
BEIJING — A knife-wielding man wounded 28 children — most just 4 years old — and 3 adults Thursday at a kindergarten in eastern China, the second such violent attack at a Chinese school in as many days.

The 3 stabbings have been part of a series of school attacks in recent years, most blamed on people with personal grudges or suffering from mental illness, leading to calls for improved security. One sociologist said the attacks may happen in clusters, with 1 assailant triggering copycat attackers.

5 of the students injured Thursday were in critical condition in the hospital in Jiangsu province, said Zhu Guiming, an official with the propaganda department in Taixing city. Zhu said 2 teachers and a security guard at Zhongxin Kindergarten also were hurt in the attack, which happened in the early hours in the school day.

The suspect was identified as Xu Yuyuan, 47, who had been jobless as being fired from an insurance company in the year 2001, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Apple's CEO Steve Jobs attacks Adobe Flash as unfit for iPhone

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
In a detailed offensive against the technology owned by Adobe Systems Inc., Apple's CEO Steve Jobs wrote Thursday that Adobe Flash has too many bugs, drains batteries too quickly and is too oriented to PC-oriented to work on the iPhone and iPad.

In a statement Thursday, Steve Jobs laid out his reasons for excluding Flash - the most popular vehicle for videos and games on the Internet - as of Apple ( AAPL - news - people )'s blockbuster handheld devices.

Apple has been criticized for the omission of Adobe Flash, which limits the usefulness of the iPhone. In his rebuttal, Steve Jobs said the most important reason for excluding Adobe Flash is that it puts a 3rd party between Apple and software developers. That means developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple on condition that Adobe (ADBE - news - people) chose to upgrade its own software, Steve Jobs wrote.

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO - 6 police officers and 1 civilian were killed Friday in a shootout in Ciudad Juarez ( the most violent city in Mexico) , on the border with the U.S., a local police officer told AFP.

"There are 6 police and 1 civilian dead but there could be more," the officer said, requesting anonymity. Police came under fire as they attempted to stop a cavalcade of vehicles carrying alleged drug gang hitmen, he added.

French police fine Muslim driver for wearing Islamic veil

Police in the western city of Nantes said the veil - which showed only her eyes - limited her vision and could have caused an accident.

The woman's lawyer says they’ll appeal against the decision, which he described as a breach of human rights.

The incident follows months of intense debate in France about whether the veils must be prohibited.

Earlier this week, President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered parliament to debate a law interdiction women from wearing full-face Islamic veils in public.

Condemned Utah killer will face firing squad

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is scheduled to execute a convicted killer by firing squad on June 18, renewing a debate over what critics see as an antiquated, Old West-style of justice.

State court Judge Robin Reese signed the warrant on Friday morning for Ronnie Lee Gardner, who killed a man in a failed escape 25 years ago.

Under state law, Ronnie Lee Gardner, 49, was given the choice of being killed by lethal injection or shot by a 5-man team of executioners firing from a set of matched rifles, a rarely used relic that harkens back to Utah’s territorial history.

After Reese said Gardner’s avenues for appeal are exhausted and that he would sign the warrant, Ronnie Lee Gardner told the judge: “I would like the firing squad, please.”

Of the 35 states with the death penalty on the books, Utah is the only one to use the firing squad as a method of execution since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in the year 1976.

New study says ocean chemistry changing quickly

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/A new study says that carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbed from the air is causing ocean chemistry to change faster than it has in 100s of 1000s of years.

The National Research Council (NRC) reports that, as the oceans get more acidic, coral reefs can be damaged and the change also threatens other sea life from fish to shellfish.

While most concern about CO2 and other gases released into the air by industrial processes has focused on rising temperatures, scientists have also become more and more alarmed by its potential impact on the oceans.

Officials had hoped they might have been capable to get to a covered lifeboat with supplies.

The rig was doing exploratory drilling about 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana and the rescue crews have covered a 1,940-square-mile search area by air 12 times and by boat 5 times.

Five headless bodies found in rebel-held Mogadishu

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents in Mogadishu say 5 headless bodies have been found in a rebel-controlled area.

A resident says a few of the dead men had been threatened by Islamist militants as they had helped build Somalia’s parliament building. “Residents believe militants with the dominant insurgent group al-Shabab carried out the killings”. He added.

No group has claimed liability for the killings.

However al-Shabab in the past has beheaded individuals it accused of spying for the U.S. and U.N backed Somali government.

Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for 3 years. Somalia has not had an effectual government for 18 years.

Quake strikes near Pacific island of Tonga

http://news-updations.blogspot.com/
A 5.9-magnitude quake hit near the Pacific island of Tonga on Thursday, but no casualties or damage were reported and no tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake struck 65 miles (135 kilometers) northeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of 21 miles (35 kilometers).

Many residents of American Samoa felt the earthquake and went out to look at the ocean while listening to radio broadcasts."Nothing is registered on our censors for tsunami waves," as said by Carol Baqui, a forecaster in American Samoa weather service.

No tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Hawaii. Police in the Samoan capital, Apia, said they’ve no reports on the temblor. "We didn't feel any earthquake," an officer, who refused to be named, said.

Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Golden, Colorado, it was a relatively small earthquake. "Right now we don't have any reports of it being felt. It's pretty far off the coast so we're not anticipating anything damaging," Julie Dutton said.

Preliminary estimates put the earthquake at 6.2, but that was later downgraded to 5.9.About 90 % of the world's temblors occur in the so-called "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake as well as volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim.

Church pedophilia scandal grows in Latin America

SAO PAULO - The imprisonment of an 83-year-old priest in Brazil for allegedly abusing boys as young as 12 in a case involving lurid videotape and a congressional investigation is the latest scandal to hit the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America.

The allegations against Monsignor Luiz Marques Barbosa — and 2 other Brazilian priests — have made huge headlines all over the Catholic nation and come amid accusations of sexual activity by priests across the region and in Europe and the U.S.

The scandal erupted when Brazilian television network SBT last month broadcast a tape of Luiz Marques Barbosa in bed with a 19-year-old that was widely distributed on the Internet and the station said the video was secretly filmed in January 2009 and sent namelessly to the network.

It was not clear if the 19-year-old, identified as a former altar boy who had worked with Luiz Marques Barbosa for 4 years, had previous sexual relations with the priest.

SBT reporters went to Barbosa's house and confronted him. Asked if he ever ill-treated boys, Barbosa said he might only answer such a question "in confession" and cut off the interview. Brazil's legislature launched a sex abuse investigation, which produced allegations Luiz Marques Barbosa molested boys. The elderly priest was under arrest late Sunday.
